DETAILS
The position of farmer florist is like a chef who cooks from their own vegetable garden. The scope of work includes both farming, retail flowers, and event floristry.
Work takes place in the greenhouses, the field, the studio, floral deliveries, and on-site at weddings. This may sound glamorous, and while it is beautiful, please note that much of the work is outdoors on a farm or in outbuildings; the manual labour for this position is demanding and rustic in nature. There are also opportunities to be part of larger flower farm projects for the season, and pursue and set your own goals for what you want to learn.
The right fit for the position enjoys a mix of both independent and team work, is self-directed, and can do manual labour outdoors daily.
The nature of the work will shift with the season, with more farm related tasks like seeding, transplanting, weeding, and pest management assistance (insects) earlier in the year, moving towards heavier amounts of design work with weddings in June, July (must be available the July 29th weekend), August, September (must be available every weekend), and October. Consistent tasks throughout the season will include harvesting, processing, and the cleaning of buckets and tools.
Retail floral work:
Processing flowers, making market bouquets and arrangements, stocking farmstand, subscription bouquets, arrangements, and deliveries.
Wedding and event floral work:
We use sustainable and foam-free techniques for event floral work in a garden-gathered style of arranging, heavily influenced by British and US floral designers like Aesme, Phillipa Craddock, Floribunda Rose, Lily Roden, and Putnam Flowers. Knowledge of these techniques and style is an asset but not essential, we will provide training. Previous experience through training in, education, and/or work in floristry preferred, especially experience with wedding floral work.
Assets to the position of farmer florist are a love of nature, knowledge of plants, and a background in art.
When applying, if you have previous floral experience, please include portfolio and floristry references.
CAUTION: working conditions include close proximity to a bee yard and poison ivy.
Accepting applications until suitable candidate found, with position starting mid-May.

Please e-mail a cover letter, resume, and if applicable, a portfolio of work, to info@georgianroots.ca .
